Project Description & Abstract

The Smart Cities Concept and Challenges project explores how modern cities can use technology, information and communication technologies (ICT), and intelligent infrastructure to address complex urban challenges and improve citizens' quality of life. The project focuses on the evolution of the Smart City concept from individual technology-driven projects toward comprehensive city-wide strategies. As urban populations continue to grow, cities face challenges related to transportation, environmental sustainability, economic development, social inclusion, public services, resource management, and overall quality of life. The project examines different Smart City initiatives and assessment approaches to understand how technology-based solutions can be aligned with the actual needs and challenges of a particular city. It emphasizes that Smart City projects should not be evaluated only according to their technological capabilities but also according to their social, economic, environmental, and sustainability impacts. The ASCIMER (Assessing Smart Cities in the Mediterranean Region) approach provides a framework for connecting real urban challenges with appropriate Smart City projects. The project investigates methods for assessing, prioritizing, financing, implementing, managing, and replicating Smart City initiatives. The proposed approach can help city authorities and organizations identify suitable technology solutions for challenges such as smart transportation, energy management, environmental monitoring, public safety, digital services, urban infrastructure, and sustainable development.
